Get The Most Out of Your Twitter Account

My name is Leonard Martin and I put together some information that will help you benefit from Twitter in a big way.

Read on to discover how I'm using Twitter to attract relationships and market to people who are seeking what I have to offer. There is power in automation and I'm given you exactly what I am doing right now to build a Twitter following and market to that group on complete autopilot.

TWITTER MARKETING TIPS

Here is a brief overview of what I'll call Twitter etiquette, some of it you've heard but is worth repeating…


Promote other people as much as you can - this shows people that you are not just interested in pushing your own agenda and that you have others interests at heart.

Post valuable and helpful information - that hasn’t come from you! Post information and re-tweet other peoples tweets that you think would benefit those who are following you. Remember that people are looking for answers to their marketing problems and if you are providing valuable content that helps them you will be seen as a valuable person that is worth following.



Post valuable information that you have created - now it’s time for you to promote your content. Promoting yourself is awesome...as long as it isn’t in your face; "buy my widget" sales pitches without personality and spammy.

I like to direct people to content on my Blogs that can inform, entertain and encourage them. My goal on self promotion is to give quality first then quantity come from viral marketing.
 
I think it’s ok to post non-marketing content like “having dinner at my favorite restaurant.” But it's easy to do too much of that and your followers will get bored of that very quickly. Your posts need to be targeted to the interests of the niche of people who at some point will be interested in what you are marketing. That is best achieved by asking yourself the questions “if I were following me what posts would I read and why?”

Seek to answer questions your followers are asking - This is important.

Like any other form of marketing online you need to consider "what conversation is going on inside my prospect's or follower's head?"

For example: If your customer wants to dig a hole in their back yard they will be looking for information about "how" to dig a hole. They have followed you for a reason and you need to be catering to that reason.

If you start right into the sales pitch about your "shovel," their eyes will glaze over and they'll click "DELETE." Give them some relevent information about digging holes they can use without buying your shovel. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how many will buy your shovel and tell ther friends about you too.

A word or two of caution is in order. The internet has more "self appointed Gurus" than anywhere else on the planet. I easily run into a dozen a day and they all have the same line about helping people be sucessful making a ton of money, attracting a ton of "FREE" leads...blah, blah blah. You don't have to be some kind of miracle worker who has perfect solution, in fact making claims like that these days will put you in a VERY LARGE group of marketers and it becomes impossible to distinguish yourself from the rest of the GURU herd.

Just be yourself and share quality information. Being authentic will give your marketing more mileage than any other thing except honesty and in reality they are synonymous when discussing this. A Guru IS NOT a Guru until his or her peers in that industry says they are a Guru and even then a true Guru is humble and never wears their business or income on their shirt sleeve.



Thank people for following you - this is the right thing to do but it can become a time consuming issue if you don’t automate your activity. I will get to automation in a moment but thanking those that follow you is very important and you need to get this happening ASAP.

I mentioned this earlier and deserves to be repeated RE-TWEET. I realize you can't automate the process of re-tweeting however if you are going to be authentic then take a little time to look over your followers tweets and the tweets of people you are following and when you find content worth sharing SHARE IT by re-tweeting. One re-tweet is worth a million email messages from an auto responder saying thanks for the follow, here's what I'm selling.

Engage in conversation - This is a powerful way to get followers. There is a reply feature on your twitter page that you use for this. DO NOT spam your product, service or business opportunity! People get inundated with this kind of stuff and they are turned off by it. Be social and conversational it takes alittle time but I guarantee it wont hurt a bit and I'll bet it will help a lot.

Keep in mind that whenever you reply to someone's twitter post the entire following of that person gets your post with your Twitter name on it. This can work powerfully in your favor when used intelligently while conversing with twitter users who have large lists.

Tweet useful and informative quotes - I like to grab informative success oriented and motivational quotes that appeal to me and retweet them to my followers. These quotes are informative, encouraging, short and to the point so that when I do actually post something with a link in it, people will have an idea of the kind of person I am and know where I'm coming from and my followers are more likely to click on the link.



Twitter Automation

This is very cool and worth your attention. Automation is your key to growing a profitable Twitter following without spending countless hours at your computer.

TweetAdder combined with Twitter has become the fastest method I've seen to create traffic. Twitter is very responsive and by using this service you can be guaranteed instant response to your postings, especially if you have some relevant informational content.

With TweetAdder I automatically follow thousands of new people over multiple Twitter accounts as well as post as many Tweets as I like to my followers. Of course I don’t recommend you post too many in one day otherwise people will unfollow you, this is what I call twitter spam and the penalty for it is... nobody wants to stay following you.

But TweetAdder is awesome automation for serious Twitter marketers.

SocialOomph


Another great tool that you will definitely want in your Twitter marketing arsenal is SocialOomph. When you follow someone on Twitter and you receive an automatic welcome message from them you are seeing SocialOomph in action.

You can easily setup a different message for each different Twitter account that you may have or you can keep them the same for all accounts. Which is exactly what I do.

SocialOomph used to be called TweetLater and was the main tool of choice for automating your tweets until Twitter slapped their service and they had to stop the auto tweet facility. None the less, SocialOomph has a host of other great services that you can use and the best part it it’s a free service.

Follow Those Who Interest You by focusing on keywords.

Another great tool I use for following people automatically who are in the same market I am interested in is Twollo.

With Twollo you can automatically follow anyone that uses certain keys words. For example if you are into Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short, you can enter SEO into Twollo and it will automatically follow the person who posted SEO in their tweet. With Twollo you'll find paying for the service is hands down better than the free stuff but is you're serious you'll invest in yourself and a couple bucks a month won't be a problem.

I have dozens of  keyword combinations I am tracking and I follow hundreds of people automatically with this tool. The best part is these people are all discussing the subjects I am interested in and so are their followers.

You can also use key words in your tweets and search Twitter by key words & phrases.

In your tweets put a #keyword at the end of your tweet. Now when someone searches the twitter community for that keyword they will also see your tweet in chronological order of course.

You should also know that the keywords in your tweet will display your tweet in searches wich allows you to target certain words, phrases or otherwise and get more exposure. Remember that the seach engines crawl sites like this looking for keywords so it can be a great tool to assist in promoting traffic to your websites.

Engaging The Twitter Community

You may have noticed that using the Twitter website to interact with the community leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not designed for ease of use because it flows chronologically.

The best tool I have come across for to engage with my Twitter following is Seesmic Desktop. If you haven’t yet used this service then you're not getting the best out of Twitter. It’s an absolute must.

Tracking Your Traffic and Clicks

If you're thinking of marketing like a professional on Twitter then you are going to have to track your traffic and clicks.

As of this writing I am receiving around 100 clicks per week for every thousand followers and that number is rising as I improve my content. My tweets are about different blog posts and articles I write and occasionally forums I post to and for different target audiences. Additionally I tweet other peoples blogs, websites, articles, forum posts etc. Remember the rule of social anything is to give before you expect to get.



Start with one target audience then specialize as you progress. You could easily spend thousands of hours dong this stuff so be careful with your time. I just improved one thing at a time, sometimes daily and occasionally one thing a week. Over time my twitter account gets better and it takes less effort than doing a marathon.

I know how I am doing by using a service called Bit.ly I have also used Budurl but I like the graphs on Bit.ly better.

Open your free account, add your links and include the shortened links into your tweets. You'll want to play with this a bit and get a feel for it but the statistics are amazing and free.
